IN CHARACTER
Name: Kaidan Alenko
Canon: Mass Effect
Canon Point: After Priority The Citadel II, and the confrontation with Udina
Age: 35

History: History here
Kaidan survived Virmire, going on to become humanities second Spectre. He was unromanced, but is loyal to Shepard.

Personality: Everything about Kaidan can be drawn back to an accident that he had no control over before he was born.

The discovery that the Element Zero that Kaidan had been exposed to in utero when he was a young boy had a profound effect on his life. Taken away from his parents when he was in his early teens, he was forced to grow up quickly, something that has affected him all of his life. He often comes over as older than he should be, though war will also do that to you.

Being a biotic, he is often painfully aware he is different from everyone else. Biotics are often mistrusted, as there are few enough of them that most normal people won’t personally know one. Rumors that biotics can read minds, plus all the negative publicity surrounding Kaidan’s own L2 implant means that he quickly learned not to let anyone get close to him for fear that they would suddenly turn against him when they found out the reality about him.

His experience at Brain Camp when he was a teenager also had a profound impact on him. For a moment when he lost control of his emotions, he did the unthinkable, and lashed out and killed his tutor, Vyrnnus as he tried to protect the girl he cared about. This experience taught him two things: one, that no matter who you were, human or alien, anyone was capable of being an utter dick, and secondly, that no matter what, he needed to be in control of his actions no matter what.

After Brain Camp shut down, he did a lot of soul searching before finally coming to the conclusion that he should join the Alliance. It was a hard decision for him, as his father had been in the Alliance before him, and he knew he would be faced with prejudices for being a biotic. But it was where he felt he could do most good, and the benefits of biotics signing up for the Alliance were always a draw. But like everything, when Kaidan puts his mind to it, he throws himself into it completely, rising through the ranks quickly, gaining a number of commendations on every posting, and generally being a good Alliance soldier. Unlike many career soldiers, Kaidan prides himself on understanding the politics of the situation round about him, making him a valuable officer to have around. If he is going to be there, he is going to understand as much as he can about things to make himself useful. One other trait he has as an Alliance soldier is that he refuses to show any weakness. He already feels that he has the weakness of his migraines, so he tends to try and work through them.

Since being assigned to the SSV Normandy, he has gradually begun to change. He’s begun to loosen up as a person - at one point Shepard has to remind him that it’s fine to be friends with his CO - and he begun to make more of an effort to fit in. It’s not always easy for him, but being on a multi-racial crew, where there were alien biotics who accepted him for who he was helped him come out of his shell. Not only has it loosened him up personally, but it helped him to become a better soldier, accepting what his biotics could do and no longer holding anything back for fear of losing control.

Lately he has progressed even further, and become a teacher of biotics as well as rising through the ranks. Teaching young biotics to learn to accept who they are, and to become better soldiers has given him a greater sense of satisfaction than he knew it was possible to get from being a teacher (what career soldier wants to teach, after all?). Seeing his students grow, and accept who they are makes him wish he had a teacher like that when he was a boy.

One of his major flaws is that he can be very quick to judge situations round about him - used to making snap decisions on the battlefield, he can carry that on into his social life. On Horizon, when he learned that Shepard was working for Cerberus, who they had fought so vehemently against on the Normandy 1, he couldn’t accept that his old friend would do that, and turned his back on her - something he regretted later, and admitted he acted rashly.

One other change that occurred to Kaidan when he joined the Normandy is his friendship with Shepard, and the other team mates. Before, he was polite, kind, a good team mate, but never allowed himself to get close to anyone. In a way, he fell a little bit in love with Shepard, which could explain why he reacted so negatively at Horizon, and took him a long time to learn to trust Shepard again. Shepard’s death hit him hard, and him being saved by Shepard before his death combined with the situation at Virmire where he survived, but his friend Ashley didn’t, he was suffering from survivor’s guilt to some degree.

However, since the destruction of the first Normandy, he has used his experiences to grow within himself - he considers himself a far better soldier, is now a leader in his own right, and has a confidence in himself that he never would have had before.

Contracts:
Kaidan tends towards the sceptical these days, he has seen enough crap pulled by politicians and others who are only after feathering their own caps that he is going to be very wary about it. But if he is going to find his way home, he's got to buy time to figure out what is going on. So he would sign the contract because he will quickly work out it's his best chance - though it will be with his fingers crossed. He wants a way home.

Abilities/Skills: Kaidan is a biotic, one of the strongest human biotics, trained as a Sentinel (http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Sentinel - combining biotic skills with). By Mass Effect 3, he has taught himself the biotic technique Reave (http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Reave#Mass_Effect_3 : designed to drain health from the enemy, and also weaken their defences) - something that in theory he shouldn’t have been able to do, especially at his age. Mnemonics for biotics are generally learned at a young age, so they can be taught to become muscle memory. It also sets up biotic ‘explosions’ in combination with other biotics.

He’s also skilled at using technology, enjoying that side of his skills.

Ingame skills include Reave (as above); Cryo Blast (using the omni-tool to send out a blast of super cooled subatomic particle which can flash freeze targets within a certain radius - setting up the ability to literally shatter targets); Barrier (capable of strengthening shields in armor), and Overload (shuts down enemy shields) - as well as being a capable shot in between all of those abilities.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths
Kaidan is a gifted soldier - he may have started late, joining the Alliance at an older age than most would, but he has worked up through the ranks quickly, gaining commendations regularly. Although he starts the series at a lower rank than Shepard, you get the impression he would have outranked him soon even without Shepard’s death holding him back.

Weaknesses
His main physical weakness is that the implant he has to power his biotics, the L2 implant is generally reckoned to be the most unstable implant, though stronger than later versions of implants. Historically, biotics with the L2 implant have been driven mad by it, sometimes going as far as going on rampages. Kaidan is lucky in that all it does is give him migraines, and leaves him somewhat sensitive to light and noise, though he’s always aware that people are watching him, waiting for him to crack.

Emotionally his main weakness is that he can be judgemental. It served him badly at Horizon, walking away from Shepard when he realized in retrospect he should have been supporting her, and he does tend to jump to huge conclusions easily. It’s something he’s working on, but he recognizes it’ll always be there to some degree.

Items:
1 Alliance uniform
M-6 Carnifex pistol
Credit chip
Omni-Tool (Capable of sending messages, item replication, hacking into systems, and basically being that ultimate last line of defence)
He also has a bioamp plugged in (allows him to power his implant and used biotics, rarely removed). No one gets to touch the bioamp.

[The video feed opens up to a man staring directly at the camera. Wary, like he doesn’t know what is out there, but determined as well. And also wincing a little against the bright light. Does it have to be so bright in here?]

I know this is probably highly irregular, but I need information right now. Does anyone know if there are any crew members of the SSV Normandy here? Let’s just say I wouldn’t be surprised to find at least one of them here.

[Though whether any of them would want to see him after what happened was anyone’s guess.]

Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m new here, and any information you can give me would be appreciated right now, because of all the hells I could have ended up in, this was not what I expected. [Well, it wasn’t the Reapers, as far as he could tell. He should be grateful.]

I’m Major Kaidan Alenko, and thank you for your time.
